Ticked Off: Test Shot
Establishing
the direction of the light source was important to do first thing, as the rest
of the shading depended on it. The clock face provides the only natural light
flooding into the dark clock, so it sets up for very dramatic lighting with
strong contrasts.
When painting the objects, not only did I have to think about
the shadows of the objects in the scene, but also the shadows cast from the
clogs above not in the scene . Including the shadow details would make
everything in the scene feel more 3D as if they were in realistic space.
When it came
to painting I made a layer on Photoshop where I would block out the shadows.
This worked really well giving me a guide to follow, so I wouldn’t get lost and
start to make it up when painting.
I was
overall happy with the two test scenes I completed, however if I could improve
on anything I would have liked to focus on the in-between shading making it
more gradual creating a larger gradation. In the scenes I do next I would also
like to add in more details such as cob webs and dust, because it’s this level
of detail which will really push my scenes making the setting more believable
and adding to the story.
