Ticked Off: Textures + Sketches
This
term I have started working on the third year film ‘Ticked Off’ helping with
the design, so far I’ve been assigned to paint a few test layouts.
I chose to
work on ‘Ticked Off’ because I really liked the story setting being in a dusty
clock, as it allows for some imaginative background design, interesting layout
angels along with dramatic lighting and colouring. The style they will be
working in, is graphic with painterly 2d elements and real life textures, it’s
a style which I am familiar with and like working in. Although working in my
comfort zone regarding style, I will be pushing myself as the scenes are quite
complex with loads of interlocking clogs, so getting the perspective and
drawings right will be essential for the success.
For this
project I first set about experimenting with brushes, trying to emulate the
texture of wood. I took the real life purple wood texture that they have been
using, and played around with it adding rough chalky textures over the top. The
brushes which worked the best were the rough chalky and graphite ones, as they
got across the rough uneven texture of the wood. I think this exploration
worked really will, adding to the flat photograph, making it feel more
believable as a textured surface.
