Background Project: Tonal Explorations
For our background project I first started looking at really successful animation backgrounds on the website animationbackgrounds.blogspot.co.uk. After looking at a few I really liked, I then broke down what makes each of them successful! I came up with a few factors namely the composition, the style and the lighting.
Lighting played a bigger part than I had enitially thought and it can easily make or break a scene. Light and shadows have the power to direct a audiences eye, highlighting something which the director wants you to see, and casting shadow on something less important. Lighting also makes scenes believable, making them have an illustionistic sense of depth.
As lighting is so important, it makes sense to plan and spend some time thinking about it. Below I did five tonal explorations where I took scenes from famous animations e.g. Iron Giant and Jungle book.
